Who We Are
The Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust (GWCT) Wales is dedicated to ensuring the long-term conservation of wildlife and the sustainable management of our countryside. We are a leading charity that focuses on protecting and enhancing the biodiversity of the natural environment across Wales. By blending scientific research with practical conservation efforts, we strive to safeguard the future of our wildlife for generations to come.
Our Mission
Our mission is simple but vital: to conserve wildlife and habitats while supporting sustainable land management practices that benefit both the natural world and local communities. Through rigorous scientific research, education, and collaboration with landowners, farmers, gamekeepers, and the wider public, we aim to create a balanced ecosystem where both people and nature thrive together.

What We Do
At the heart of our work lies cutting-edge research and practical conservation initiatives. Our activities span across a range of disciplines, from managing habitats and restoring ecosystems to studying wildlife populations and developing innovative conservation strategies. The main focus areas include:
- Habitat Restoration and Management: We work to restore and enhance key habitats like wetlands, woodlands, and heathlands, ensuring they provide shelter and resources for a diverse range of species.
- Species Conservation: Through scientific research and fieldwork, we monitor the health and survival of key species, such as farmland birds, red grouse, and other native wildlife.
- Sustainable Land Management: We support farmers, landowners, and gamekeepers in adopting wildlife-friendly practices that also make economic sense, promoting both conservation and productivity.
- Education and Outreach: We engage with local communities, schools, and landowners to raise awareness about the importance of conservation and how we can all play a part in protecting Wales’ rich natural heritage.
Our Values
- Scientific Excellence: We are committed to evidence-based solutions and are proud of our long-standing reputation for scientific research in the field of wildlife and conservation.
- Collaboration: We believe in the power of partnership. By working with farmers, landowners, conservationists, policymakers, and local communities, we can achieve greater outcomes for both nature and people.
- Sustainability: We promote conservation practices that not only protect the environment but also benefit local economies and support sustainable farming and land management.
- Education: We are passionate about sharing knowledge, raising awareness, and inspiring the next generation of conservationists.
