Student Update – March to April 2025

“As the event was on a Sunday, families were welcomed to the event, so alongside the clay shooting and raffle I led on the arts and crafts activities…”

CEREDIGION CLAY DAY

“On the 16th of March I attended the Ceredigion Clay Day at Dovey Valley with Alaw Ceris (Fundraising and Engagement Officer) and Logan Crimp (Agriculture and Conservation Officer). This was a clay shoot event arranged by the GWCT Ceredigion Fundraising Committee to raise funds for The Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust in Wales.”

“As the event was on a Sunday, families were welcomed to the event, so alongside the clay shooting and raffle I led on the arts and crafts activities, creating pieces made from recycled shot gun cartridges.”

“Two large mosaic pieces were created with the help from attendees, which were made by sticking shotgun cartridges, standing on end, onto a wooden board with an image as a guideline. There was a table set up for making cartridge flowers which involved cutting and bending the cartridge until it flayed out and sticking it onto a piece of willow creating the flower. The last mini project we had involved wrapping twine around a safety pin stuck to an empty cartridge, before filling it with hot glue and sticking feathers in to create buttonhole decorations. See pictures of the pieces below!”

CURLEW FINDING

“April was spent searching for curlew to help assist the Curlew Connections Project. Working with Katie within ICA 9, I walked several different routes, searching for signs or sounds of curlew. I was also surveying for sightings of predators, and disturbances that could affect any curlew within the area, as well as taking note on the habitats within the area and whether it had potential for a curlew nest. As the season continues the role will change towards monitoring breeding pairs but for now the focus is on locating already existing pairs and finding new ones.”

Montgomeryshire is a large area, and it is hard to cover it all – if you are interested in volunteering for the Curlew Connections Project it is not too late, and you can find out more here…

Equally if you have heard or seen a curlew in within your local area in Montgomeryshire please report it here…..

NEXT MONTH

In May, I plan to continue my search for curlew pairs as well as start working on my dissertation data collection – also related to curlew. As well as attend events, such as a field trip with a group of second year students from Bangor university, going to look at a farm on Anglesey…
