Aiming high for conservation

GWCT’s Ceredigion Committee hosted their 3rd Clay Shoot at the Dovey Valley on Sunday 16 March 2025.

Now generously supported by Cambrian Birds and their recently acquired Dovey Valley Shooting Ground the competition attracted over 100 competitor who set out in squads of six to tackle the 10 stands offering competitors varying levels of difficulty. Cambrian is investing in modernising the shooting ground which includes a new very testing high bird stand. All but the best found this new stand very testing with only a few being successful hitting the clays. In the first squad to ever shoot this new stand, and missing all 10 clays GWCT Cymru chairman Owen Williams christened it “Sobbing in your pillow.”

Shooting wasn’t the only activity on the go at the event. The GWCT Wales student, Kaylee Fay, led on craft activities for all ages using empty, colourful cartridges – from large art installations to small feather buttonhole decorations, which made use of the used cartridges discarded by attendees from the stands.

Attendees were fuelled by delicious food catered by the onsite café, with the addition of Cambrian Burgers and Steak Baguettes cooked on the barbeque getting raving reviews from all!

The competition ran throughout the day blessed by spring sunshine with guns enjoying the friendly atmosphere whilst trying their best to aim high for the top prize which was a days’ shooting on one of Cambrian Birds’ spectacular shoots. At the end of the day attendees listened in anticipation for Owen Williams to announce the winners after a brief talk about the important work done by GWCT in Wales.
